Retrofitting and digitalization of an offshore crane on the Noble Patriot

Project overview

In April 2025, our service technician performed an extensive retrofit of the existing crane control system on the Noble Patriot offshore platform.

The project's goal was to record the crane's operating data in detail in the future, optimize existing safety functions, and improve various workflows through targeted software adjustments.

Advanced Operational Data Acquisition
For the new data acquisition, encoders were installed on the main and auxiliary hoists, as well as on the slew drive. Additionally, we laid new cables and expanded the crane control with the required input modules.

The integrated load data recorder system now records, among other things, the speeds and positions of individual crane movements. The data is automatically saved and can subsequently be imported into a prepared Excel template for analysis.

 

Optimization of security features
As part of the retrofit, the control software was expanded with a new test function for the so-called rig saver system. This allows the safety shutdown to be controlled directly via the control panel.

During the initial inspection, contamination was found within the triggering unit. After cleaning and readjustment, the function was successfully tested multiple times with the crane operator and technical personnel.

 

Crane Setting Correction and Optimization
During commissioning, we found that individual parameters for boom length, reach, and lower end position were no longer set correctly. The original values were restored and then verified using platform data.

The speed of the auxiliary hoist was also readjusted to the intended setting.

 

Custom Software for Drilling Operations
Additionally, the EBT system's software has been adapted. The gripper and clamp can now be operated simultaneously, which simplifies the alignment and positioning of the tubes.

After several successful functional tests with the drilling team, the [reserve] PLC was also equipped with the current software version and checked.

 

Successful retrofit under offshore conditions

Through the combination of new sensors, expanded data acquisition, and targeted software adjustments, the existing crane could be technically modernized and optimally adapted to the current requirements of offshore operations.

The project demonstrates how even existing crane systems can be improved with individually developed retrofit solutions concerning Data transparency, operational safety, and ease of use allow for significant improvement.
